Updated press release based upon information provided by the Napa County Sheriff’s Department.

On Friday, March 13, 2015, at approximately 4:55 PM, three Napa Police Officers and a Sergeant assigned to the Police Department’s Special Enforcement Unit were in the Alta Heights area of Napa preparing to serve a search warrant for drugs and firearms. The location of the residence to be searched is located in the 1400 block of East Avenue and it is the same

location where officers had served a narcotic warrant approximately one month earlier. The suspect involved in this case has an extensive criminal history which includes several acts of violence, narcotic violations and gang affiliation. The Special Enforcement Unit of the Napa Police Department is responsible for quality of life and gang investigations.

As officers were parked in the area preparing to serve the search warrant they saw the suspect drive past them on a motorcycle. The suspect immediately recognized the officers and sped away. Officers activated their vehicle emergency lights and siren and a short pursuit ensued. The suspect lost control of his motorcycle in the intersection of Spring Street and Hill Avenue. As officers approached the suspect they repeatedly yelled at the suspect “Police, show us your hands, show us your hands!!” The suspect instead reached to his midsection for what officers recognized as a handgun. One of the four police officers fired three shots with at least one of those shots striking the subject in the torso. Following standard protocol, officers immediately secured the suspect in handcuffs and began CPR and other life saving measures. The suspect was transported to Queen of the Valley Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. A handgun, suspected methamphetamine and a substantial amount of cash were recovered from the suspect. The Napa County Sheriff’s Department continues to conduct an independent investigation into this incident and more interviews and evidence collection is expected.

The Napa County Coroner’s Office has identified the suspect in this case as James Richard Jimenez, 41 years of age.

The officer’s name will be released within the next 24 hours.

The sergeant and three officers directly involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave per department protocol.

Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
